Social Aims

Spill Media is a Social Enterprise whose aims and objectives are to improve the quality of life for people living in Coalfield areas by:

Offering experience and skills to people in areas of high unemployment and creating a company that can retain these skills to aid social inclusion, bridging the inter-generational gap and aiding community regeneration.

Offering rural communities and disadvantaged groups access to our media services through digital inclusion work.

By offering new skills and opportunities we increase people's confidence and self worth, reduce isolation and help people develop creatively.

Ystradgynlais is an ex-coalfields Communities first area. The village and surrounding area developed due to the coal mining and steel making industries. These declined from the 1970s and all had closed by the end of the 80's. Towards the end of the 1990s, there were 1500 further job losses when Lucas SEI and Dewhirst plants closed.

There is no industry in this area and the problems are evident - low economic activity, high unemployment, high rate of long-term illness, outward migration of young people seeking opportunities further afield and the legacy of past-industrial activity on the landscape. By providing skills, opportunities and enterprise in the creative media we will be addressing some major problems identified in the area

The work of Spill Media is particularly important in an area like Ystradgynlais which features high on the index of deprivation due to factors such as high rates of unemployment. They have worked with hundreds of young people from the community offering them experiences, that would not have otherwise been reached.
